Abstract

BEHÇET'S DISEASE: IS THERE INSULIN RESISTANCE?

Full text
Background: Insulin resistance which is a risk factor for cardiovascular and renal involvement has been detected in some inflammatory diseases, however there is no knowledge on whether it exists in Behçet's Disease (BD) or not (1, 2).Objectives: To determine whether there is insulin resistance in BD.Methods: Twenty patients with BD and 22 patients with fibromyalgia as controls were included in the study. Plasma values of glucose, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein, high sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), triglyceride, total cholesterol were measured, body mass index was calculated and insulin sensitivity was estimated by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) test in all subjects. Results: HOMA results (2,9±2,6 vs 2,2±1,3, p<0.01) and hsCRP (11,9±7,1 vs 5,8±4,9, p<0.01) were significantly higher in the patients with BD compared to controls. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 30% of the BD patients. There was no dyslipidemia in the BD group. Conclusion: We determined that there is insulin resistance in BD and accompanying metabolic syndrome in 30% of the cases.References: 1.
